The Beirut harbor explosion acted as the catalyst of the “Agri-Youth” project.
In 2020, the Melkite Greek Catholique Archdiocese of Beirut and Jbail/Lebanon, allocated 7000 m2 of land located in the village of Wadi el Karm to the scout company of our Lady of the River Parish, Bourj Hammoud, eastern suburb of Beirut.
The plot offers 2000 m 2 of agricultural land, 3500 m 2 of scrubland and a structure that can be rehabilitated as a youth summer house. The parish priest of the Lady of the River church assigned ALPHA to design a project offering outdoor leisure activities to the children of Bourj-Hammoud, living in an area identified by UNICEF Child Protection Vulnerability Index as “one of Lebanon’s most vulnerable cadaster”.
ALPHA called for the CCFD-Terre solidaire partnership. Joining efforts, ALPHA and CCFD-Terre solidaire, submitted a comprehensive project proposal to the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) and the Fondation de France (FDF), whom we thank warmly for their support.
The Agri-Youth project does not only offer healthy activities in a healthy environment to youth and children living in urban slums devastated by the harbor blast. It includes job opportunities through ongoing capacity building sessions in social entrepreneurship that take into account environmental, eco-agricultural, food security and bio-diversity issues. These trainings increase their resilience and adaptive capacities to face environmental damages and invest in their future.
